As board member at Galleri Box in Gothenburg Sweden I will be organizing the exhibition with the Swedish/UK artist duo Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry who will be showing video and photographs.

Kihlberg and Henry’s practice aims to capture uncertainties of the present and generate an unstable perception of time. They explore subjective understandings and non-linear narrative as a method to see an event from alternative angles and perspectives. Kihlberg and Henry’s practice is not bound to any particular medium, but they are drawn instead to finding ways in which documentation can operate beyond representing the past.
The three-channel video Inbindable Volume (2010) takes the viewer through a journey around the brutalist space of an empty library interior. The three screens of the work communicate in a rhythmic and textural visual grammar, driven by the voice of an omnipresent narrator who describes the lifespan of a building from conception to abandonment through a text which skips unsettlingly between past, present and future tense.
This Story is About a little Boy is a reconstruction of a film according to its recollection through subjective memory. A friend of the artists was asked to recall a film which had moved him in some way and which made an impression on his life. His recollection of The Fallen Idol by Carol Reed was recorded and used by the artists as the narrative structure to re-edit the visuals of the film. Confusions, alterations, hesitations and added events were reanimated in the reconstruction to capture the visual ambiguities of re-representing memory. The video aims to investigates the relationship between personal histories and memories with the filmic and fictive.
Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry have been collaborating since 2004. They are currently based in London and Birmingham, and for the past two years have been researchers in the fine art department at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. They also work together on Springhill Institute, a mobile production project which previously hosted a seasonal programme of international artists production residencies.

Kihlberg och Henrys arbete undersöker relationen mellan åskådaren och bilden i tid och rum, och dess föränderliga ståndpunkt gentemot historia och minne. Deras konstnärskap inrymmer video, fotografi, performance, installation och teckning. Förhållandet mellan berättandet, det verkliga och fiktiva har ofta en central roll i deras konstverk.
Tre konstverk ställs ut på Galleri Box. Videon Inbindable Volym (2010), utspelar sig i Birminghams ikoniska Central Library, stadens mest ökända exemplet på brutalistisk arkitektur vilken kommunen planerar att riva 2013. Genom en språklig och visuell grammatik, bearbetar Inbindable Volym det konkreta i byggnadens arkitektur och böcker i relation till rummet, tiden, dess flyktighet och ogreppbara.
This Story is about a little Boy (2009) är en visuell rekonstruktion av en film enligt ett minne. En vän till konstnärerna återberättar en film som gjort ett starkt intryck på hans liv. Minnet av The Fallen Idol av Carol Reed spelas in och används sedan av konstnärerna för att återkonstruera den originella filmen till en ny film där berättelsen har förändrats genom minnets tolkning och glömska.
Frames (2011) är en nyproducerad serie fotografier av nittonhundratalets biografer i Portsmouth, England, som antingen har ändrat deras användning eller rivits för att använda marken för andra ändamål. Fotografierna söker efter filmduken där filmerna och bilden en gång har projicerats för publiken och vilken nu är ersatt med andra bilder och funktioner.
Karin Kihlberg (SE) och Reuben Henry (UK) är verksamma i London och har under de senaste två åren arbetat som researchers vid Jan van Eyck akademin, ett post-akademiskt center för design, teori och konst i Nederländerna. De har tagit del i utställningar och events vid Tate Modern, Hayward Gallery och Le Mois del la Photo i Montreal. De är representerade av Danielle Arnaud Contemporary i London.
